Gum Health
All of us have bacteria in our mouth. To be more precise somewhere between 10-20 billion at any one time depending on when you last brushed your teeth! This ecosystem of bacteria also known as biofilm, comprised close to 1,000 different species of bacteria and in fact only a very small proportion of which are detrimental to our oral health. However, if left untreated the bacterial infection will progress into Periodontitis, characterized by further damage to the gums, bones, and tissues holding your teeth in place…. ultimately leading to tooth loss.
Causes of Gum Disease
While bacteria and poor oral hygiene are the primary cause of gum disease there are a number of other factors effecting susceptibility, these include:
◉ Hormonal changes: puberty, pregnancy, menopause and post-menopause
◉ Smoking
◉ High sugar diet
◉ Certain medications
◉ Genetics and your immune system response to bacterial toxins
◉ Illnesses – include diabetes, cancer, dry mouth.
